Left Turns in Life by Nicola Karesh

Begging on a street corner.
I wonder what you’d rather be doing?

Paid sex to feed little ones.
I wonder what your dreams used to be?

Pimping out ladies and hustling for a dime.
Was this always the vision,
the direction
the purpose
that you held for your life?

Sleeping under a bridge.
I wonder where your life really started?

Smoking crack in a dive on that no-name street.
Whose daughter are you and
what made you take that
ominous left turn?

Spray paint in a can
Bad intention paired with talent.
How did you get from here to there?
I really wonder.

Deserted, all alone with nothing
That remotely resembles a family
‘cept a scrawny, flea-bitten, gnarled toothed dog
Who adores the ground you walk on.
